In the sun-drenched summer months, European tourists descend
in droves, but from autumn through spring, the ‘Coast of the
Sun’ still has another 250-odd days of sunshine on reserve,
the perfect setting for exploring the villages and hillsides
of Malaga province. We’ll stay at the Marbella Club for the
week, a whitewashed Andalucian estate no more than a wedge
shot from the Mediterranean. It’s the perfect home base from
which to enjoy a sommelier-guided tapas evening in Mijas, a
paella lunch on the beach, bullfights, flamenco dancing,
sherry tastings, and an afternoon on the sidelines of the
Sunday polo match.
And let’s not forget the golf. World Top 100 and Ryder Cup
host Valderrama. Sotogrande. La Reserva, Aloha, the
wonderfully exclusive Las Brisas, and Finca Cortesin, the
new home for the European Tour’s Volvo Championships. Six
rounds, over foothills and ridges in the Andalucian terrain
those hordes of summer tourists will never get the chance to
