Imagine a city
dripping with exuberance for the best urban life has
to offer — culture, history and remarkable golf only
a short, wonderful drive away. That place is London,
home to kings and queens, the finest shopping and
theatre in the world; a location where the best of
everything is never far away
On this trip, the
height of metropolitan cultivation can be found in
your accommodations in the London Outpost, a
recently restored manor house that has been
converted to a hotel of class and distinction. The
Outpost offers all the amenities one expects from a
world class modern hotel, but with Old World charm
and appeal. With only 11 rooms, The Outpost, which
was restored in 1998, appeals to those who enjoy the
luxury and intimacy that can only truly be found in
a small classic hotel.
For the golfers on
this trip, the remarkable appeal of London is the
city’s close proximity to some of the world’s most
distinguished courses, including the history of
Sunningdale, the exclusivity Wentworth, or the
genius of Walton Heath.
Perhaps the most
famous course available to play during your short
excursions from London is Sunningdale. In this case
it is double your pleasure, as Sunningdale’s Old
Course, designed by Willie Park Jr., offers majesty
and difficulty (it is the site of Bobby Jones famed
66 shot in 1926 to qualify for the British Open),
while the New Course, which was opened in 1922 and
was created by Harry Colt, offers a rugged,
masculine appeal. There are few courses in the world
that can offer the heathland drama and variety of
golf that comes alive at Sunningdale. Stay and play
36 — you won’t be disappointed you did.
After a terrific
breakfast at The Outpost, plan on taking a leisurely
20 mile drive to Walton Heath Golf Club, a course
with a grand history few can top. The club boasted
26 dukes, lords, and knights, as well as others from
the upper echelons of England’s top social circles
when it opened in 1903. King Edward VIII and King
George VI were both members at varying times. But
beyond the prestige resides a great golf course,
which has hosted the Ryder Cup. Once more two
courses are offered, both designed by top British
amateur Herbert Fowler. The Old Course, the better
known of the two, offers gnarly, deep bunkering and
stunningly contoured greens bordered by wondrous
heather.
Arguably one of
Britain’s most unrelenting tests, golfers will also
get to test Wentworth. Located in the Surrey
countryside, this is the posh course tested by the
world’s best each year during the World Matchplay
Championship. All the greats have teed it up on the
fairways of Wentworth’s west course, known as “Burma
Road,” including the “Big Three” — Arnold Palmer,
Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus — who all won the
matchplay event. Former British Open and Masters
champ Seve
Ballesteros
claims Wentworth to be his favorite course in the
world -- next to Augusts itself.
Though lesser known,
St. George’s Hill may be among the most breathtaking
golf experiences you will ever undertake. “The
prettiest courses are the best and certainly one of
the prettiest and the best is St George’s Hill,”
said legendary golf writer Bernard Darwin of this
course, which opened in 1912 and is considered by
some to be the finest achievement of architect Harry
Colt.
Looking for a break
from golf? The Outpost’s location behind fashionable
Sloane Square provides access to the culture,
history, art and shopping for which London is
renowned. Only a short walk away is the Royal Court
Theatre, which reopened five years ago after a
massive restoration. The theatre, which offers plays
from innovative new playrights, is well worth a
visit in order to get a glimpse of the building’s
remarkable architecture, where modern art meets
Victorian times.
The Outpost’s superb
location also allows for short strolls to shopping
at the world famed Harrods, which provides five
acres of merchandise. The store’s motto could double
as a catch phrase for incredible variety available
in London: All Things, For All People, Everywhere.
